SANTO DOMINGO – Organizers have officially announced the launch of a record-breaking culinary endeavor set to unfold on July 26 in Santiago de los Caballeros. Dubbed “Santiago Inspires: The World’s Biggest Mofongo,” the project aims to secure a Guinness World Record for the largest serving of mofongo, one of the Dominican Republic’s most beloved traditional dishes.
The announcement was made at a press conference in Santo Domingo, where project director Clara Olivo and executive director Reymond Ulloa shared key details of the initiative. They were joined by general producer Eligio Reyes, representing the SMA Group, who will be responsible for managing the event’s logistics, promotion, and execution.
The project brings together an elite team of Dominican culinary professionals. Among them are Miguel Rincón, vice president of the Dominican Culinary Association; Solangel Velázquez, who holds the 2024 Guinness record for the world’s largest majarete; renowned hotel chef Miguel Carela; and food safety and menu engineering expert Yaniris Beltre. Together, they will lead the preparation of what is expected to be a historic serving of the mashed plantain-based dish.
Adding star power to the event are some of the country’s most recognized media personalities. Jhonny Estrella, Bray Vargas, Lady Álvarez, and Brenda Sánchez will serve as official hosts, bringing a sense of national pride and vibrant energy to the festivities.
“This is a project that combines talent, tradition, and identity,” said Olivo during her remarks. “We want to show the world what the Dominican people are made of.”
The event has garnered support from key culinary institutions and corporate sponsors, including the Dominican Culinary Association, the Dominican Gastronomic College, SMA Group, and Amigos Restaurant. Organizers say this broad coalition reflects a shared commitment to celebrating Dominican culture and showcasing the richness of its gastronomy on a global stage.
With anticipation building across the country, Santiago Inspires is set not only to break records but also to reinforce the deep connection between food and national identity in the Dominican Republic.
