BOGOTÁ, Colombia — Mexico continues to rank among the most popular international destinations for Colombian travelers, particularly the Mexican Caribbean and Cancún. However, the Dominican Republic is emerging as one of the fastest-growing destinations in the region, recording a significantly higher growth rate in Colombian arrivals during the first months of 2026.

According to Paula Cortés Calle, president of the Colombian Association of Travel and Tourism Agencies (ANATO), Mexico ranked as the fourth most visited international destination by Colombians between January and April 2026, attracting more than 150,000 visitors during that period. The figure represents a 12% increase compared to the same period in 2025.

The Dominican Republic followed closely in fifth place, welcoming approximately 126,000 Colombian visitors during the first four months of the year. While total arrivals remained below Mexico’s, the Caribbean destination posted a substantially stronger growth rate of 32.9% year-over-year, highlighting its increasing appeal among Colombian travelers.

“The Dominican Republic’s growth during the January-April period stands out, particularly when compared to other regional destinations,” Cortés said in remarks published by REPORTUR.co.

According to ANATO, the five most visited international destinations for Colombians during the period were the United States, Spain, Panama, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic.

Mexico’s popularity continues to be driven largely by destinations in the Mexican Caribbean, especially Cancún and the Riviera Maya, which benefit from strong air connectivity, extensive tourism infrastructure, and a wide range of accommodations and attractions.

Cortés noted that Colombian travelers are also increasingly exploring destinations beyond the traditional resort hubs, including Tulum, Playa del Carmen, Isla Mujeres, Cozumel, Bacalar, Costa Mujeres, and Puerto Morelos. These destinations appeal to visitors seeking nature, wellness, cultural experiences, gastronomy, and a more authentic connection with local communities.

Industry observers point out that the Mexican Caribbean remains one of the region’s most competitive tourism markets. At the same time, the Dominican Republic—particularly Punta Cana—continues to strengthen its position among Colombian travelers through expanded air connectivity, growing hotel capacity, and a diverse tourism offering.

The latest figures suggest that while Mexico remains a leading choice for Colombians traveling abroad, the Dominican Republic is gaining momentum at a faster pace, intensifying competition among the Caribbean’s top leisure destinations, including Curaçao, Aruba, and Mexico’s Caribbean coast.
