PUNTA CANA, Dominican Republic — Residents and visitors across Punta Cana and the wider La Altagracia province should prepare for a mix of sunshine, tropical heat, and passing showers this Saturday as a tropical wave moves across the Dominican Republic, according to the latest forecast from the Dominican Institute of Meteorology (INDOMET).

Meteorologists report that the weather system, combined with a trough positioned west of the country, will increase cloud cover and generate scattered showers during the morning hours across eastern Dominican Republic. While rainfall in Punta Cana is expected to remain generally light and intermittent, other regions of the country could experience more intense downpours accompanied by thunderstorms and occasional wind gusts later in the day.

Despite the increased cloudiness, temperatures will remain well above seasonal averages. INDOMET forecasts daytime highs between 33°C and 35°C (91°F to 95°F), while overnight temperatures are expected to range from 24°C to 26°C (75°F to 79°F). The presence of Saharan dust particles over the Caribbean will continue to contribute to a higher heat index, creating conditions that may feel significantly warmer than the actual air temperature.

Health authorities are urging the public to take precautions against the prolonged heat by drinking plenty of water, wearing lightweight and light-colored clothing, and limiting direct exposure to the sun during the peak hours between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Special care is recommended for children, older adults, pregnant women, and individuals with underlying health conditions, who are considered most vulnerable to heat-related illnesses.

Officials also advise residents and tourists planning beach visits, outdoor excursions, or recreational activities to monitor official weather updates throughout the day, as localized showers may develop with little warning.

According to INDOMET, weather conditions are expected to gradually improve Saturday night as the tropical wave moves away from the region. Forecast models indicate a significant reduction in rainfall by Sunday, with more stable atmospheric conditions and predominantly sunny skies expected across much of the Dominican Republic, including Punta Cana.
