PUNTA CANA, Dominican Republic — Rainy conditions greeted residents and visitors in Punta Cana early Thursday as a trough interacting with a new tropical wave continues to generate unstable weather across much of the Dominican Republic, according to the Dominican Institute of Meteorology (INDOMET).

Meteorologists report that the weather system will maintain cloudy skies throughout the day, producing scattered showers, thunderstorms, and occasional wind gusts in several regions of the country. In La Altagracia Province, increasing cloud cover is expected to bring intermittent rainfall, while neighboring eastern provinces, including La Romana and San Pedro de Macorís, are forecast to experience more widespread showers, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours.

Despite the rainfall, temperatures will remain high. INDOMET forecasts minimum temperatures between 24°C and 26°C (75°F to 79°F) and maximum temperatures ranging from 33°C to 35°C (91°F to 95°F). Elevated humidity, combined with lingering Saharan dust particles, will keep the heat index above the actual air temperature, creating persistently hot and humid conditions.

At this time, La Altagracia is not included among the provinces under weather alerts issued by either INDOMET or the Emergency Operations Center (COE). However, authorities have maintained alerts and advisories for other parts of the country where heavy rainfall could increase the risk of urban flooding, as well as rising river, stream, and creek levels. Officials are encouraging the public to monitor official weather bulletins as conditions may change throughout the day.

INDOMET also advises residents and tourists to exercise caution during periods of thunderstorms and strong wind gusts. In addition, health officials continue to recommend avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., as high temperatures and humidity will persist despite the rainfall.

Maritime authorities have also maintained precautionary recommendations for small vessels operating along both the Atlantic and Caribbean coastlines due to unusually rough sea conditions, urging boat operators to remain informed through official marine weather advisories.
